Meet Sonia Perez: Head of Box Office for ‘Go Get the Axe,’ and Expert Imitator of Elaine Benes’ Bad Dancing

Though it’s easy to think of theater as a purely creative endeavor, it would be impossible to put on a show without a lot of business know-how (hence the phrase “show business”). Which is just one of the reasons why Sonia Perez, FIG Productions’ head of box office, is such an instrumental member of the Go Get the Axe production team.

In addition to bringing a ton of experience to the role — including work as a director of accounts payable/finance for one of New York City’s most prestigious design firms — her wide variety of interests (from fashion to film to food) are an asset to every facet of the production. She also knows her way around an archaeological site. Here are a few things you didn’t know about Sonia Perez, in her own words.

1. SHE DIGS ARCHAEOLOGY.

I was a member of an archaeological dig for two months in Bulgaria, on a Bronze Age site.

2. SHE’S GOT A CIGAR ROLLER IN THE FAMILY.

My maternal grandmother hand-rolled cigars for a living in Cuba.

3. SHE’S A NATURAL BORN CHEF.

I feel most like myself when I am cooking; it's my happy place.

4. SHE CAN DANCE AS EMBARRASSINGLY BAD AS ELAINE BENES (THAT’S A COMPLIMENT).

I've been told that my imitation of "Elaine’s bad dancing" from Seinfeld is better than Elaine's herself; it's top-notch.

5. SHE HAS A KEEN SENSE OF WHICH PEOPLE TO AVOID ON THE SUBWAY.

I have a Spidey sense-like ability to avoid insane people on subway cars (gained from years of experience) .

6. SHE TOOK A MISSION TRIP TO SOUTH AFRICA.

I was on a mission trip to East London, South Africa with a group of amazing women, providing aid, comfort and a sense of empowerment to impoverished children affected by AIDS in a small school. It was a truly eye-opening and humbling experience.

7. HER INVOLVEMENT WITH GO GET THE AXE EVOLVED NATURALLY.

Being involved with FIG Productions and Go Get the Axe evolved organically. It's truly an honor and pleasure to be surrounded by such creative talents. I look forward to continuing the relationship and being a part of the company flourishing.
